PRESENTATION OF THE PARC
Tarangire National Park is one of those parks in Tanzania which has a high density of wildlife and bird species. Its etymology can be traced back to the river flowing through it which is the Tarangire River.
The diverse wildlife it has include some of the common species like hippos, elephants, buffalos, giraffes, and some of the rare species like elands, honey badger, banded mongoose, impala, African wild dog that can be found mostly or primarily in this park.
Tarangire National Park is relatively less crowded than Serengeti National Park and hence has a calmer atmosphere. One of the reasons why people visit this place is because of the elephant population which is largest in Tanzania and the ancient baobab trees which still stand tall today. With the park being free from crowd, you can experience the park in isolation and solitude.

The low density of human beings gives you more privacy to immerse yourself completely into the scenic beauty of this place throughout the day, and then relax your muscles along the bank of Tarangire River in the dusk. Tarangire is an excellent year round park, but looks beautiful during both the wet and dry seasons.
Highly seasonal, it is a place that provides a dry season retreat between June and October and November to May.
Tarangire is home to all of Tanzania’s most iconic animals – from the diminutive dik-dik to the towering African elephants and giraffes that attract visitors from all around the world. It fosters the fringe-eared oryx with its graceful horns, the towering greater kudu, and the tiny Ashy Starling, three endangered animals that can be found nowhere else in the country.
During the dry season, herds of elephants up to 300 numbers can be seen digging in the apparently dry riverbed of the Tarangire River looking for underground streams.
In dry season Tarangire River becomes the park’s sole source of water and draws huge herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and hartebeests as well as the lions, leopards, and other predators who prey upon them.
With its wide variety of habitats and food sources, Tarangire National Park is a popular destination for birds. It hosts more than 550 species of bird – the highest number on all of Tanzania – Tarangire truly is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
